Between 1986 and 1989 CIA revised its estimates of the economic size of Eastern Europe downwards. This was not yet the transition recession only the correction of previously overestimated figures.

Now East Germany and Czechoslovakia are between Portugal and Spain and all the other Easte European countries are bellow Portugal. The gap between West and East Germany grew to almost 40 per cent.
