c) Socialism as a social and economic system.

According to Marx, socialism should be the first stage of the communist society that must come necessarily after the revolutionary destruction of capitalism. The Soviet and East European Marxists believed that the Soviet-type system created in the Soviet Union in 1930s and in the East European countries after the war actually was socialism. Some other Marxists disagreed, calling it the form of state capitalism. As mentioned above, the West European socialists had different view of socialism. Even in the countries where socialist or social democratic parties were in power, they usually did not consider the current social and economic system to be socialism.
