5. The Eastern European countries, with the most extensive government intervention in the sample record an unusually egalitarian income distribution (using a dummy variable). This is consistent with other results [e.g., Kyn (1978)]. It is difficult to determine to what extent recorded equality is due to a different structure of asset ownership and to what extent to different statistical conventions and the failure to take full account of income in kind, various fringe benefits and unofficial forms of income.
